Southern students and faculty represented the university at the spring national College Media Association Convention in Times Square, where they attended informative sessions and contributed as speakers on industry topics.
Eight students involved in the SCSU SPJ chapter, Southern News and Crescent magazine attended the convention, where they learned about exploring Al, student press freedoms and more journalistic topics.
At the convention, journalism student Brandon Cortés, alongside Professor Jodie Gil, spoke about the CT Journalism Collaborative project, which helps student journalists publish their work with media outlets. Southern was one of the founding members of the collaborative.
Cortés shared his experience working on his story about Connecticut’s declining bus ridership.
Gil explained why having this collaborative has been beneficial to students, and the reasons why she began working on this project with other Connecticut colleges and media partners, such as Connecticut Public, WSHU Radio, Connecticut Mirror and the Hartford Courant.
Journalism Department Chair Cindy Simoneau, organized and presented a separate session on the importance of alumni being featured in college programs.
She explained that events like Alumni Night provide networking opportunities, while the alumni project in the JRN 490 Capstone course connected students with department graduates.
