Journalism Scholarships now available for 2025-26 academic year

Charles S. and Eugenia M. Whitney scholarship

Who: Full-time Journalism major

GPA: 3.2 or higher

Requirements: 500-word essay and an interview with the JRN Scholarship Committee

Eugenia M. Whitney, who provided the endowment that funds this award, became interested in Southern’s Journalism Department through Frank Nappi, an SCSU alumnus. She was impressed with the student publications as well as the professors, students and staff she met at Southern. She sponsored several scholarship programs and made Southern a primary beneficiary in her will.

Rob Parker scholarship

Who: Full-time Journalism major or minor

GPA: Maintain satisfactory academic standing

Requirements: 500-word essay and an interview with the JRN Scholarship Committee

Other considerations: Interest in sports writing, or from an unrepresented group

Rob parker graduated from Southern with a B.S. in Journalism in 1986. He translated his skills into a decades-long career in sports journalism, starting at a Pennsylvania newspaper, but quickly landing a job as a sports reporter for the Daily News in New York City. Later, he was the first Black sports columnist at the Detroit Free Press and Newsday. He has also worked for ESPN Radio.

Vern Williams scholarship

Who: Full-time or part-time Journalism major

GPA: of 3.2 or higher

Requirements: 500-word essay and an interview with the JRN Scholarship Committee

Vern Williams was a longtime member of the Connecticut photography and drone journalism community and pioneered drone photojournalism courses at Southern. He is also credited with creating a Drone Academy for the public where professionals, using drones for their businesses, can learn better photographic techniques.

Robin Marshall Glassman scholarship

Who: Full-time Journalism major

GPA: 3.2 or higher

Requirements: 500-word essay and an interview with the JRN Scholarship Committee

Robin Marshall Glassman founded the Journalism Department at Southern Connecticut State University in 1978. In 1989, the Society of Professional Journalists selected Marshall Glassman from among journalism professors in the nation for the Distinguished Teacher of Journalism award. She was active in SPJ for a quarter of a century, serving on the Connecticut chapter board of directors and as president. When she retired in 1994, the Connecticut SPJ named its Lifetime Achievement Award in her honor.

Ruthies Endowed scholarship

Who: Full-time Journalism major

GPA: 3.2 or higher

Requirements: 500-word essay and an interview with the JRN Scholarship Committee

Other considerations: A female student, or non-traditional student
